Conservation@Home

Conservation begins at home — your home.

Conservation@Home is a partnership between Barrington Area Conservation Trust and Citizens for Conservation to encourage homeowners to maintain their properties using conservation practices that benefit the environment. The program was started by The Conservation Foundation of Naperville.

You can create a beautiful landscape in your own backyard by using native prairie grasses and wildflowers, woodland plants, and native trees and shrubs — and there's no need for pesticides, fertilizers, or excessive watering or mowing.

Conservation@Home volunteers can assess your property to help you create a more conservation-friendly environment right in your own backyard.

Conservation@Home Consultations

Conservation@Home volunteer consultants provide simple, easy-to-implement steps to encourage conservation-friendly practices on private land.

If you would like to learn more about how to implement environmentally friendly practices on your property, please schedule a Conservation@Home consultation with one of our representatives. He or she will make an appointment to visit your land and will suggest ways to:

  • Incorporate native flowers, shrubs, and trees into your landscaping
  • Minimize the use of pesticides and fertilizers
  • Lessen the amount of turf grass in order to reduce watering and mowing
  • Identify and remove invasive species such as buckthorn, garlic mustard, and loosestrife
  • Establish wildlife habitat in your yard
  • Reuse, reduce, and recycle waste products
  • Create rain gardens to reduce runoff
  • Conserve water and improve rainwater and runoff management on your land
  • Learn about local landscapers, nurseries and native seed sources that specialize in native landscaping

Conservation@Home will award plaques to residents who demonstrate measurable success in these areas. There is no fee for a Conservation@Home consultation; however, a $50 donation is requested to receive a plaque.
